Le Panier: heritage, charm, and conviviality
Le Panier is considered the birthplace of Marseille: it was here that Greek settlers from Phocaea founded Massalia over 2,600 years ago. Today, the district still preserves its unique character, with narrow streets, colorful facades, artisan shops, and street art.
Its name — Panier (“basket”) — comes from an inn that existed in the 17th century, the “Logis du Panier,” which eventually lent its name to the street and the whole neighborhood.
Over time, Le Panier has undergone many transformations and is now a vibrant area filled with artists’ studios, independent creators, and local shops. Strolling through its streets is a journey between past and present, with an atmosphere that feels like a village in the very heart of Marseille.
